Over the past few days, I have been reorganizing my Lightroom Catalog and my external hard drive. I have over 14 years worth of images, both personal and professionally on this drive. 30 thousand images. I have client images from when I first started my photography career on that drive. I had the “smart” idea to delete old file folders off of this drive without thinking really to check them. It was my new folder that I deleted.
Over the past month I noticed that the site wasn’t really working on mobile, it didn’t display how I wanted and it was hard to navigate to read new post and after a wonderful weekend working on a series of sponsored post, I knew that I had to make some changes! Off to learn a few new things about running a blog, coding, and running a wordpress website.
A few weeks ago I started to follow Graham Stephan on YouTube. It started with me watching his millennial money episodes, but I also got into watching his Passive Income videos also. As you know blogging can be a passive income if you are doing it right, but it also requires a lot of work to get it there. This means that I am also going to be launching a few new things on Odysseys With Love along with my Mesquite Texas Guide and Wandering In DFW. I am also looking into a lot of changes that need to be made here to really optimize the blog.
I haven’t been active on Youtube lately and started to think of a way to get us back on there, but with how uncomfortable I am on camera, I starting to think of different things that I can do. I noticed a few other YouTubers do something a little different. Thats where Podcast come in for us.
Earlier this year, my mother purchased the Silhouette Cameo 3 as a Christmas present for me. I have since fallen in love with crafting and slowly turning my creations into a career. But, there are a few things that I wanted to be able to do, that I just have not been able to do just yet. I started to do a little more research into what all I wanted my machine to be able to do, and that is when I realized I REALLY needed to purchase the Cricut Maker. Why did I need the maker? A lot of what I want to do is only really doable with the Maker and the Maker’s Knife Blade. What Can The Maker Do that the Silhouette Cameo Couldn’t? I had been wanted to create earrings with my old Cameo, but I just couldn’t get it to work. Either it would mess up my faux leather, or it just wouldn’t cut right at all. Since James is a carpenter, I knew that there would be times that I would like a decorative inlays in some of our designs. The Cameo just couldn’t do it. I know later down the road I also would like to make my own purses and wallets, so the maker was looking REALLY good to me. I knew that it also had better pressure. What did I do with the Cameo? I have been working with a fellow crafter pretty much since I got the silhouette and knew she was looking for a machine. The Silhouette would meet her needs also. So, I offered it to her first and she is learning it now. I am still going to be helping her out. I know I have been bad about posting here, but this is what you can expect So what is changing here? We are gearing up for Spring and Summer travel, but I also want to share what I am learning with Odysseys Creations, cut files, and more here. Do You Have Any Tips For Me? The Cricut community is HUGE I know, so I ask you, do you have any tips to share with me and other readers? Thanks For Reading! Don’t Have Time To Read This Article? Thank You for downloading our 2019 Elementor Blog Post Template. I really do hope you will enjoy this and it makes blogging a little easier for you. First, a little bit of information about this template and why you should use it. Blogging is already hard enough, formatting your blog post should not be something that you really need to think about. That is where this template comes into play. The first two paragraphs of your blog post should let your readers know what the blog post will be about. Each paragraph needs to be between 3-4 sentences long, but not all of the information needs to be given in this area. But first, the template for this formatting is available in our resources page. AKA Start Here to download. ***Delete This caption*** Create a twitter card that is 1024X512. Make it easier by creating your graphic at https://www.canva.com/Most People Do Not Read The actual Post, they tend to scan the headings As the heading above states, most people when they arrive on your website to read a particular article, they tend to scan the headings first to see if there is anything there for them to learn. This is a place to capture their attention. This also breaks up long and winded text on your site. Again you will only want to have between 3-4 sentences in each paragraph, with two paragraphs between each heading. You can also break up your text with images, quotes, and videos for example. Images on your site Need to be appropriately sized . One thing that will drive a reader away is slow loading time of your website. One thing that will cause your site to bog down and run slower is images that are too large. I am guilty of not resizing my images for the web, but I have found that using https://www.canva.com/ helps with the sizing of images for me. I use a few different templates for images on Odysseys With Love. These templates include: Twitter Cards Facebook Post Instagram post Blog Banners Pinterest Graphics Sometimes You Follow The Rules – Sometimes You Need To Break Them There are no hard rules to blogging, these are just tips that you can follow to make reading blog post on your site easier for your readers. A few more tips: List – Everyone loves list Images that can catch your readers eye, but still flow with your site. Find your style and make a template like this one with Elementor, or download this one if you love my style. Have a call to action at the end of your blog post. Make sure your images are pinnable, and give your reader a few choices. Ask your readers a Question One of the biggest things you can do is ask your readers questions within your blog post. This creates engagement with the post. After all, that is why we are here. About a week ago, I noticed that my domain hosting bill with iPage was due and it was a HUGE amount for three years. I didn’t have that kind of money at the time. I have been watching Darrel Wilson for a while now and remember him reviewing several different web hosting companies. This included iPage and my new hosting company *SiteGround. So Off I went to watch this full video, which I am embedding below for you to also watch. It may surprise you. It really surprised me at how low iPage was reviewed here. Why did I switch from iPage? It wasn’t just the pricing, which for three years was almost $400, which was far, but It was mainly after watching the above video, and really looking at my site, that it was SLOW. Odysseyswithlove.com was so so slow. Darrel’s video proved that to me. But I had noticed that a lot too. I also have a lot of server errors where I would be working on something and all of a sudden it wanted me to reinstall wordpress. NOPE don’t do it, just wait an hour and it will reset its self. I also wasn’t fully happy with their customer service and tech teams. Whenever I called or used the chat feature, there was always a language barrier, or they wanted me to upgrade. I thought I had unlimited plans, but like Darrel said in the video, most of these companies want you to upgrade so after you hit a certain amount on their platforms, its time to upgrade. Choosing SiteGround Not only did Darrels test put SiteGround in the top three preforming, but I went and did the Chat with the sales team about switching host, how to go about it, and had a LOT of dumb (there are no real dumb) questions. Their customer service was top notch. Quick and friendly. I knew that I needed to move Odysseys With Love, but also, Odysseys Studio, and needed to purchase Odysseys Creations. They answered EVERY thing and assured me that it would be an easy transition. All of this started a week ago, but I have been busy working on Odysseys Creations. It took a few days to transfer everything and I didn’t want to mess anything up by posting a new article here just yet. I did upgrade to have them transfer everything over for me instead of myself so their tech team did that for me. One of them was for free, and I paid an extra $30.00 to have the other domain transferred here. Next step for me is to pay to have the actual domain name transferred to Siteground. So most likely the cause of it taking so long to transfer things was due to me, or iPage giving the trouble transferring things over, as they have two different back ends. So Where To Go From Here Now that Odysseys With Love is switched and I have Odysseys Creations fully built and just adding products as I create them, I am coming back here to start concentrating on this more again. It’s not going to be updated once a month anymore. I am still working on my own time management as it is like running several companies now. A few weeks ago, I posted that I would be doing better time management wise, and well, me being me, that just did not happen. I really am trying to do better but well life gets in the way, and Odysseys With Love took to the back burner. That is changing today, it has to. I have put a lot of work and effort into this and I guess I have just burned out myself too. So Where Did We Go?
This past Christmas, I got something that I am VERY excited to own now. I have my own Silhouette Cameo 3 and I am still learning a lot about it. One thing that I have noticed is I hate that I can not easily print my cut files. So after searching all over the web, I figured something else out on my own. Not only am I able to print my cut files, but I am also able to upload them to a gallery that my clients and customers can browse on the web! This is making it EXTREMELY easy for me now. It may be a little extra work but in the end its easier than doing a screenshot of my Silhouette Studio screen. Lightroom to the rescue! I am a member of the Creative Fabrica website and when I download an SVG file, not only do I get the SVG file, I also get a PNG of the same one. Since I also have Lightroom on my computer, I am also able to upload the PNG files to my computer. That is where the print module comes into play. Importing into Lightroom With a new catalog created, I drag and drop all of my PNG files. I also make sure not to change the file names, as this is an important thing for searching Silhouette Studio later on. I then click on the import button and load all of my files into Lightroom. Using The Print Module If you are familiar with Lightroom, you know that Templates are on the left-hand side of the screen. I went with one of the contact pages. Then on the right-hand side, you are able to adjust the settings of the contact page. I made it where no margins were needed since I am using sheet protectors. I also adjusted the amount of columns and rows to fit quite a few designs on the page. I also made sure that the file name would also be printed on the contact sheets. Printing Your Designs Instead of just hitting the print button, I used the Printer option instead to make a PDF of all my pages. I then printed from this page to make sure that I could print on both sides of one sheet. What If I don’t have the included PNG or its a Silhouette Store Design? It may take some time, but you can save your designs as a JPEG and then import that file into Lightroom also. What About Uploading the designs to my new website? This took a little bit of time to figure out. I didn’t want to upload EVERY single design to WooCommerce. I knew it would take forever! So I went to YouTube to learn what I needed to upload the Web Module to my website. Turns out it really isn’t that difficult. Again the templates are on the left-hand side of the screen and I am able to make a few adjustments to the layout of my gallery. When a customer or client clicks on a file, it opens it up larger and gives them the file name also. So how do I upload this webpage to my website? As long as you know your FTP settings, you can fill this in and also tell Lightroom where to put the end product. I have mine going to Designs and when you put https://creations.odysseysstudio.com/designs/ it leads to all of my designs. Now, this may take a while to upload. I also redesigned the webpage to scroll after having pages. I also included my watermark so others can not screenshot or download the design easily. Thanks For Reading! ? That’s a pretty bold statement right there, I’m Struggling With Blogging. But, it is the truth for Odysseys With Love. I have not been able to really think of a good blog post in a while now. I don’t know the direction that I want to take Odysseys in anymore, and the truth of it is, I have struggled with everything. I use to be able to come up with 2-4 post a week. I noticed my struggle after losing so many of my blog post a while back. I haven’t wanted to go back and rewrite them. So, sitting down this morning, I look at the list I created a while back about these post, and know I am going to recreate them one at a time, but I also haven’t had the support at home to write these lately. That’s for later. Let’s look at what is keeping me from writing, and what I want to do to correct it. Time, Influencing The Blog I waste a lot of time. I am bad about playing on the computer and not doing things that I should. Take last week for instance. I was more worried about Odysseys Creations. My new adventure. Yes, this might be important in the future. I am hoping that it will take off and I will turn it into a career too. BUT that is all I did last week. I SUCK at time management. I will get on my computer and sit here for hours on end. Not doing anything important. I let my house go even. It’s a wreak. I know I have to do something about it. That is when I noticed Time Blocking on Pinterest. I thought it was interesting, and started to learn a little more about it. That’s what I did this morning. I started to tweak my google calendar to block out times for me to get things done. So, I am going to try and focus on using this to schedule out my day and really get things done. If this works, you may see a full post just on using time blocking. Money and Odysseys With Love We all know that making money with blogging is possible. BUT! you have to work for it, and it is going to take a long time. I have not put much effort into making money with Odysseys With Love and have not really invested in it either. Why? It has been hard on our family financially this year. With me not making much if anything with my photography this year, but again I haven’t put much effort into that either this year. That is all changing as I am planning to put myself out there again this year. With money being tight, we haven’t been able to do a lot this year to blog about. Silly me, why not look and blog about the free things to do in Dallas and Fort Worth! So, I am planning a few new outing in the coming weeks, along with Blogging and Video work from our trip to Enchant! Sitting Down and Creating A Content Calandar I have not had a direction that Odysseys really was heading towards. That has to change and I really have to start thinking about what direction I want Odysseys to go. So my next thing is creating a content calendar and REALLY sticking to it. I am going to start working Odysseys With Love, and make this into something, not just something I do every once in a while. I hate that I feel like I have failed my few readers I do have. I have to plan out Odysseys, both the blog, social media, and emails, and more! I Am Finding My Way With Blogging I know this post seems a little scattered, but, I am trying to find my way with everything and things are going to change in the new year. I am going to be a better businesswoman, a better partner to my husband James, A better Mother and Daughter. Things are changing and For the better! Thanks For Reading! ?
